Explore the Four Layers of the Rainforest!

 

 

Activity Title:  Layers of the Rainforest

 

Time needed to complete this activity:   1 Class session

 

Goal:

 

  • Students will learn about the different layers of the rainforest and will be able to identify the different layers by the end of the lesson.

 

Standards:

 

  • National:
    • ELA: Standard 3
    • National: Standard 1, Standard 3
  • New York State:
    • Social Studies: Standard 3
    • ELA: Standard 1, Standard 2

 

Objective:

 

  • Given the “Layers of the Rainforest” PowerPoint, students will identify the four layers of the rainforest on their worksheets with no error.

 

Materials:

 

 

Use of Technology:

 

  • Children will be introduced to the layers of the rainforest by Samantha and Professor Wild through the PowerPoint presentation.

 

Introduction/Anticipatory Set:

 

  • Ask students to tell you what they know about the rainforest:
    • Sounds
    • Animals
    • Plants
    • What does the rainforest look like? 

 

Development:

 

  • Model: Behavioral Model
  • Strategy: Direct Instruction and Indirect Instruction
  • Method: note-taking, convergent and divergent questioning

 

TEACHER PREPARATION: Be sure to have some information about each layer, besides the information on the PowerPoint; maybe different animals, plants, or interesting facts about each layer. Try to find things that will seem interesting to your students. 

 

 

  • Begin the “Layers of the Rainforest” PowerPoint. Let the characters finish speaking on the first slide before you hand out the worksheet and move on to the other slides. 
  • Hand out the Layers of the Rainforest Worksheet for students to follow along with during the PowerPoint 
  • As you go through the PowerPoint, encourage questions from students, as well as ask convergent and divergent questions based on the present information and prior knowledge of the rainforest. Include fun facts that will grab their attention.

 

Closure:

 

  • Students will write in the journal:
    • about the four layers of the rainforest
    • at least 2 facts they learned about each layer
    • what they specifically want to learn about the rainforest (i.e. an animal, plant, etc.) 

 

Assessment/Evaluation:

 

  • Diagnostic: Pre-assessment of rainforest knowledge
  • Formative: Note-taking
  • Formative: Reflective journal entries

 

Accommodations:

 

  • Struggling Learners: Seat changes as necessary for visual and audio accommodations, visual map of the layers of the rainforest, and an additional set of notes (done by the teacher)
  • Grade Level Learners: One-on-one assistance when needed
  • Early Mastery Learners:  Ask those interested if they wouldn’t mind taking notes for those who are absent (can use either carbon copy paper or photocopy the notes)
